Freak Show (Why No One Is Not One)

It's time to dispel a common myth that poisons our culture and tears at the very fabric of civilization itself, and that is the myth that there is anyone out there who is not a freak.

Society's idea of a civilized mind
tries to comply with a
contrived
media derived
modus operandi
noses, hands, and eyes
up tight, up to
the window display to find out
who they're about to be today.

See most folk follow
the familiar model
stand in line like you're told
buy the lie that's sold
in a glossy tri-fold
it's the most current event
your TV's ever sent or
ever will, it's Heaven
spent a fortune on
producing this commercial
a thrilling composite of the most
prevalent denominator's
predominant perceptions
modeling manufactured models of
how to be the best at
fitting in
at the latest convention of the
latest convention
of the latest trend.

But it's all pretend, friend
to belong
that's the swan song
and it echoes on and on and on…

Everyone's a freak show
everyone's a wacko
there are no conformists, only
better liars
everybody's eyes are on
someone else's prize
so take that freak flag out and
let it fly!

Everyone wants to be liked
now whether everyone will admit it or not is
a bit of a knot,
a trip over a twist of plot in this story, but
that everyone wants to be liked
you can be sure.

Everyone wants to be like
each other
brothers and sisters
misses and misters
since kidhood twisted
by a vivid reflection of
what brought approval and what
brought rejection
so we learned to fake it to
make it
up to
do whatever it took
to survive to
pacify
the culture vultures, and
it all ends up whether we're
being up front or
putting up fronts
we settle.

But no one is
the image they project
a circumspect disguise
so memorize
the lies of the
politically correct but
be warned
no one is the image
they project.

So how long
before the freak
in each of us
drops off the bus
while reaching
for expression?

Someone's religion is my superstition
someone's poison is my medicine
my criminal is someone's hero
my oppressor is someone's leader
sin is a virtue and
virtue a sin
treasure is trash and
trash is fashion
a lunatic's a genius
and the ordinary is freakish
be
cause
we all hearken
to the march of different
drummers that thunders
in our skulls
its pulse ingrained in our
brains and bones
for we alone
to hear alone
each a unique
variation in vibration
each dancing to
our own private
but only in private
and hiding it by
calling it out in others first.

That which is most you
will break through
will burst from beneath
the superficial sheath
still worn like a
torn and tattered uniform
what norm to
conform to?

What's hot or not
who's in our out
who cares about
any of that clap-trap
you'll make yourself dizzy
trying to keep up
give up
looking anywhere outside yourself to
find yourself
give up relying on
other people to
define you
to tell you who you are, based on
who they think you are
defy the fads that try
to lock you in a box
take a lesson from the fool
the exceptions are rule
preconceptions are impossible
to satisfy
and that's damn good
why
because if not life
would be unbearably
boring and more
it would be unnecessary.

If I were you
you wouldn't need to be
so just keep on being you
and I'll keep on being me.

By simple merit of being human and alive
we're already so much alike without even trying
but it's that part of you that's always been
most different from everyone at all
for as long as you can recall
that piece of you
that makes you distinct
that is your gift
and your power is to give it.

Could you imagine if everyone let their freak flags fly? If everyone let out for the whole world to see, their most genuine, authentic, original, uncensored selves? What a freak show the world would be then!
